How to Pray to God Using the ACTS Prayer
A lot of us would love to be much closer to God than we presently are. But for some of us, this doesn’t happen and we struggle to pray or doubt if He would even hear the few words we manage to say to Him.
But the thing is, God has said in His word that if He hears us when we call to Him:
‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’
Jeremiah 33:3 New International Version (NIV)
God wants to be as close to us as we want to with Him and He is ever ready to listen to and attend to every prayer we pray according to His will.
So if you would love to pray to Him but find you still struggle to, here’s a simple prayer technique Christians from around the world use to simplify their prayer lives and which you can also adopt.
How to Pray to God Easily Using the ACTS Prayer
I first heard about the ACTS prayer a few years back when I was having a few struggles with my prayer life.
At that time, I had a few issues and felt God was far from me. I, therefore, lost the desire and zeal to pray. Then I stumbled upon this prayer type and praying gradually became a thing I started doing regularly again.
What Does the ACTS Prayer Stand For?
The ACTS prayer is a simple acronym of the types of prayer or the way you should pray to God to ensure your prayers get answered.
You see, even though God yearns to answer our prayers and give us the beautiful desires of our hearts, certain times we don’t pray the right way and our prayer ends up not getting answered.
Learning how to pray to God is one of the best steps you can take for your Christian life as it guarantees your prayers will get answered.
Here’s what the ACTS acronym stands for. Its also doubles as the right way to pray to God.
1. ‘A’ Stands for Adoration
God is mighty; the creator of the heavens and the earth who has everything, creating them out of nothing.
However, as great as our God is, the one thing He can’t give himself is praise.
Praises and adoration are the things we can give to God that moves His heart. When we give Him adoration, we enter His presence and this is the fastest way to get Him to also tune to us.
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name” (Psalms 100:4).
Give God adoration for who He is; for how mighty He is and how he can’t be compared with any other god and watch how He moves in your life.
3. ‘C’ Stands for Confession
God’s words says we all have sinned and are not worthy of His glory or to come before Him.
‘For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.’
Romans 3:23 King James Version (KJV)
‘But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf, and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.’
God is so holy that we are not fit to come before Him. Even when we try to be righteous, our righteousness presents as filthy rag before Him.
However, God in His mercy and love made provisions for us to come to Him anytime we want. We only have to confess our sins before Him, promising to forsake them forever.
3. ‘T’ Stands for Thanksgiving
First of, anyone who is alive has a reason to be thankful to God. God in His mercy, protects us and our loved ones daily from the evils that lurk around us and this is one reason to be thankful for.
He also daily loads us with blessings too numerous to mention and for this we should sing praises and offer thanksgiving to Him when we pray.
4. ‘S’ is for Supplication
According to Webster dictionary, to supplicate means:
‘….to make a humble entreaty especially : to pray to God.’
A prayer of supplication is to ask humbly from God, the desires of your heart. You should also believe that He hears and will give all that you ask.
The ACTS prayer has come through for me a few times, especially at those times when I get confused how to approach His presence.
What Can Stand in the Way of Your Prayers Getting Answered
Learning how to pray to God is great, but did you know that’s not all it takes to get your prayers answered?
There are certain things that should be eliminated from your life, and others introduced before you are guaranteed of answers each time.
Here are four things that will make your prayers go unanswered
1. Unconfessed Sins
Unconfessed sins will make God turn His back on your prayers. Luckily, this part is dealt with in the ACTS prayer and we can be rest assured of answers to our prayers once other things are in place.
God hates unbelief and the prayers of a man harbouring doubt in his heart will most likely go unanswered.
So when we pray to God, we should believe He answers and we will get what we q ask if it is according to His will.
This is yet another obstacle that will stand in the way of our prayers being answered.
God says in His word that we should first forgive everyone who errs us so He can also forgive us our sins.
Mark 11:25-26 says:
“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”
4. Praying Outside of God’s Will Or Out of Selfish Motives
While I was in school, I once had a course mate pray for another course mate of ours to fail a course we all did because said course mate refused to teach her during the exam.
While this may seem hilarious, things like this incidence happen on a daily as people pray to God out of a selfish and/or wicked motive or out of God’s will.
It goes without saying that our father will not answer these prayers as the supplicant has asked amiss.
Knowing how to pray to God, and knowing habits or characters that hinder prayers are the keys to ensuring our prayers get answered each time we pray.
