6 Ways to Keep Your Kitchen Hygiene

Most of us spend a lot of time in the kitchen cooking or making the place presentable. Because of the many activities that go on in the kitchen, and the fact that different types of foods get cooked and stored here, the kitchen gets exposed to and is home to a lot of bacteria, dirt, and germs.

To ensure your kitchen stays free of these germs and bacteria, you should adopt some kitchen hygiene or tips. Here are six of such simple kitchen rules you should embrace:

1. Wash Your Hands Regularly
Research has shown that over 25% of all food-borne diseases get passed around from unwashed or not properly washed hands.

Before handling any food items in the kitchen, ensure you wash your hands carefully using a mild soap and lukewarm water.

Also cutting the habit of washing your hands after cooking so don’t possibly take out bacteria from one room to the other.

2. Sanitize Your Cutting Board
Your cutting board does a lot in the kitchen, cutting or slicing veggies, fruits, and even large chunks of meat.

Due to this, it gets a lot of bacteria residue, even after being washed. To eliminate these completely, ensure you carry out periodic sanitization of this board.

You can disinfect by mixing vinegar with water and soaking this board in this solution for 20 – 30 minutes.

Alternatively, you could use hydrogen peroxide to kill all bacteria completely.

If you have any strong smell lingering on the board mix one part baking soda, one part salt, and a little water and scrub at the it for a minute or two.

3. Clean Up After Each Meal
While you might be tired after cooking, it is important you go a step further and tidy up your cooking environment.

Leaving used plates or bowls lying around or a dirty counter top will only encourage a bacteria spread and build-up.

Cleaning up will prevent this and also discourage the attraction of roaches or rodents into your kitchen and home.

4. Sweep and Scrub Regularly
You should sweep your kitchen daily, mostly after doing the dishes each time to get rid of any food particle that might have fallen while cooking.

You should also scrub weekly or twice weekly to ensure you get rid of any spill that might be left even after sweeping.

5. Take Out the Garbage Can When Full
You should also empty the garbage can daily or at least each time it gets full.

While at it, you should also disinfect the can to get rid of all bacteria on it.

6. Clean Out Your Fridge and Freezer Regularly
Your fridge or freezer stores most, if not all of your perishable foodstuff and these must be left uncontaminated.

Ensure you clean these out regularly using a wet dishcloth and soap.

Take out all foodstuff every few days and wipe from top to bottom using the dishcloth.

To get rid of any unpleasant smell that might linger, keep a box of baking soda open as this will absorb the smell to keep the fridge smelling fresh.
